AN ANALYSIS OF STUDENTS’ DIFFICULTIES IN SPEAKING ENGLISH: A CASE STUDY AT THE THIRD SEMESTER STUDENTS OF ENGLISH DEPARTMENT OF FKIP OF UNIVERSITY OF MATARAM IN ACADEMIC YEAR 2012/2013

Abstract


Abstrak: Penelitian in bertujuan untuk mencari kesulitan dan penyebab  kesulitan dalam berbahasa inggris pada mahasiswa semester tiga, fakultas keguruan dan ilmu pendidikan, Universitas Mataram.  Jumlah populasi sebagai sampel yang berpartisipasi dalam penelitian ini sebanyak tiga puluh (30) orang yang telah diobservasi dan diwawancarai.  Data dari penelitian ini dikumpulkan melalui observasi dan wawancara.   Data  tersebut kemudian dianalisis dengan mengidentifikasi masalah yang ditemukan dalam observasi dan wawancara tersebut kemudian diakumulasikan.  Hasil dari studi ini menunjukan bahwa ada beberapa kesulitan yang banyak dihadapi mahasiswa dalam berbahasa inggris, yaitu; tidak percaya diri dalam berbahasa inggris, takut melakukan kesalahan, tidak tahu cara dalam mengeluarkan ide kedalam bahasa inggris, ragu kalau kata-kata yang mereka keluarkan salah, mereka tidak bisa mengucapkan suatu kata-kata tertentu.  Penyebab dari kesulitan-kesulitan tersebut adalah karena kekurangan kosa kata, pengcapan, kelancaran dan tata bahasa.  Mereka tidak memiliki kosa kata yang cukup dan pengetahuan tentang tata bahasa dan bagaimana mengucapkan kata-kata dalam bahasa inggris.

 

ABSTRACT: This study aims to find some difficulties and the causes of students’ difficulties in speaking English at the third semester of English department, faculty of teacher training and education, Mataram University. The populations were thirty (30) students who participated in this study as the samples, they were observed and interviewed.  The data in this study was gained through observation and interview.  The data obtained was then analyzed by identifying the problems from observation; interview and then the data were accumulated.  The result of this study showed that there were some difficulties that students encountered in speaking English.   Based on the result, it was found that the difficulties mostly faced by students is that they were not confident to speak in English, they were afraid to make mistakes, they did not know how to share their ideas in English, they hesitated if their words were wrong, they could not pronounce particular words.  The causes of those difficulties were the lack in vocabularies, pronunciation, fluency and grammar.   They have no sufficient words, knowledge about grammar and how to say the words in English.
